What is Dalgona?
Dalgona whipped coffees and matchas have been all over the internet! Every other influencer and blogger has been making their own version. Some are truly beautiful, while others fail miserably. We certainly have failed attempting to make this recipe! So, what is Dalgona? It comes from the Korean word Dalgoona (달구나) meaning "it’s sweet." In Korea, Dalgona is a Korean sponge candy. A delectable sweet caramel light crunchy cookie, which Koreans young and old enjoy.
What is a Dalgona 'whipped' matcha?
Just go onto tik-tok and search #matchawhippedchallenge and you'll find out! Dalgona whipped matchas have quickly become popular after Dalgona whipped coffees. A recipe from SouthEast Asia having equal parts instant coffee powder and sugar adding hot water, milk then using a whisk (preferably electric) until it becomes wonderfully creamy. A Dalgona 'whipped' matcha is the same only substitute matcha powder for the instant coffee! (This is way better btw!!).
How long does it take to make a Dalgona whipped matcha?
Patience is key. You need to whip the matcha for up to ten minutes! If you use an electric whisk, the time will be reduced and it is much more likely your whipped matcha will come out to the perfect whipped creaminess.
How can you customize a Dalgona latte?
However you want of course! How we chose to is by adding fresh mango by pureeing one in a food process. Other options are to add:
- a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg
- lavender or rose oil
- or other citrus like lemon or an orange peal
How to Make a Dalgona Matcha Latte!
(We pre-made matcha ice cubes to prevent watering down this amazing recipe) Whip egg white with sugar until light and fluffy.
Add Hone Matcha, mix thoroughly, set aside. Peel and dice small mango. Blend to a nice pulp in a food processor. Fill the bottom of the glass with mango purée. Add matcha ice cubes if desired! Mix 1 tsp Hone Matcha in a separate bowl with 1/4 cup of warm water until all lumps have disappeared. Add 3/4 cup milk to the glass. Add matcha mixture over milk. Using a bowl scraper, scrape the fluffy matcha mixture from earlier onto the top of the glass, fully covering the other ingredients. Sit outside in the sun and enjoy your delicious creation
